Family Hylidae – Treefrogs
Northern cricket frog (Acris crepitans)
Description: 1/2-1 1/2 inches; warty; brownish-green to gray marked with obscure dark blotches or spots; rear of thigh with dark, longitudinal stripe with rough, uneven edges; head and snout relatively pointed.
Distribution: Statewide; common.
Breeding period: March to July or August.
Breeding sites: Creeks, ponds, oxbows, or lakes with mudflats and sparsely vegetated shorelines.
Voice: Mechanical "gik-gik-gik" resembles sound of pebbles struck together.
Comments: Gray and green treefrogs calling in background. Recorded on Pearl River Wildlife Management Area in Madison County.
