Family Hylidae – Treefrogs

Pine woods treefrog (Hyla femoralis)

  • Description: 1-1 1/2 inches; reddish brown to gray usually with a few irregular dark blotches; rear of thigh with yellow or orange to white rounded spots on dark background.

  • Distribution: Southern third of state; common.

  • Breeding period: April to mid-August, usually during and after periods of rainy weather.

  • Breeding sites: Flooded ditches, rain pools, temporary to semi-permanent ponds.

  • Voice: Rapid, monotonous "kek kek kek kek," similar in rhythm to Morse Code but much deeper pitch.

  • Comments: Gray treefrogs, narrow-mouthed toads in background. Recorded near Red Creek in Stone County.
