Family Microhylidae – Narrow-mouthed Toads
Eastern narrow-mouthed toad (Gastrophryne carolinensis)
Description: 3/4-1 1/2 inches; plump, smooth skin; head tiny with fold of skin across back of head; dark gray to reddish brown with broad lighter stripes along siaes; belly heavily mottled.
Distribution: Statewide.
Breeding period: April to September or October, usually after heavy rains.
Breeding sites: Ponds, lakes, sloughs, flooded ditches.
Voice: Nasal, high-pitched, whiny "waaaah," somewhat like a petulant lamb.
Comments: Recorded in Richland, Rankin County.
