Spring peeper (Hyla crucifer)
Description: 3/4-1/4 inches; light brown to gray with a relatively large, conspicuous, irregular "X."
Distribution: Statewide; common.
Breeding period: Mid-to-late December to March in southern Mississippi. January or February to April in northern Mississippi.
Breeding sites: Temporary or semi-permanent pools, ponds, ditches and swamps.
Voice: Measured "peep" given repeatedly.
Comments: Small chorus recorded near Raymond in Hinds County; individuals with leopard frogs calling in the background recorded on Ross Barnett Reservoir, Rankin County; large chorus recorded near Florence in Rankin County.
