Spring peeper (Hyla crucifer)

  • Description: 3/4-1/4 inches; light brown to gray with a relatively large, conspicuous, irregular "X."

  • Distribution: Statewide; common.

  • Breeding period: Mid-to-late December to March in southern Mississippi. January or February to April in northern Mississippi.

  • Breeding sites: Temporary or semi-permanent pools, ponds, ditches and swamps.

  • Voice: Measured "peep" given repeatedly.

  • Comments: Small chorus recorded near Raymond in Hinds County; individuals with leopard frogs calling in the background recorded on Ross Barnett Reservoir, Rankin County; large chorus recorded near Florence in Rankin County.
