Just a little picture

Sounds like

I have listened to the new Fountains of Wayne CD, Welcome Interstate Managers, for quite a while now. Here is my incomplete list of comparisons with other bands:

Mexican Wine - XTC
Bright Future in Sales - Steve Miller
Stacy's Mom - Cars
Hackensack - Prefab Sprout
No Better Place - Bob Dylan
Valley Winter Song - Simon & Garfunkel, Ron Sexsmith
All Kinds of Time - ELO
Little Red Light - ?
Hey Julie - Simon & Garfunkel
Halley's Waitress - Prefab Sprout
Fire Island - ?
Peace and Love - ?
Bought for a Song - Steve Miller?
Supercollider - ?

Other connections are still on the tip of my tongue; I hope my vast readership will contribute helpful suggestions. If I know Chris, such analogies will quite possibly exasperate him to no end, but he is used to being vexed by me and expects nothing less.

My favorite songs are No Better Place, All Kinds of Time, Supercollider, Bright Future in Sales, Little Red Light, and Bought for a Song.

Flugelhorn always makes me think of Billy Joel. Not very cool, but there it is.

I recently purchased Glass Houses for $1 so I could play someone the Worst Song Ever Written: All for Leyna.

BTW, Bright Future in Sales was playing around minute 4 of the Malcolm in the Middle Thanksgiving episode.

Quick group of guitar chords at the end of Mexican Wine: isn't that a nod to something?

The end of Mexican Wine does sound very familiar - my initial guess was Posies or Smashing Pumpkins, but despite a weekend-long review of my holdings in those properties I have not been able to identify the source.

More FOW aural encounters:

Yvonne heard "Peace and Love" as background for an 'upcoming movies' promo on AMC.

Our friend Fred Siewers played "Valley Winter Song" on his radio show "Barren River Breakdown" which is a roots music show aired on NPR in KY. It was great to hear that song out on its own, out in the wilds.
